Why Do Dogs Pant? And What Does Excessive Dog Panting Look Like?

Panting is a dog’s way of saying, “I’m having a great time!” It’s also a natural way for your dog to cool themself down. But excessive panting can be a warning sign that something serious is going on.

Pet health is really personal, and often, there isn’t one answer behind your dog’s behavior. We spoke to a vet expert to identify seven possible reasons for your dog’s panting, how to cool them down and when you should worry about it.

How to Keep Your Dog Cool

If your dog is panting because they’re hot, there are several things you can do to help cool them down.

1. **Provide Ample Water**: Always ensure your dog has access to fresh, clean water, especially during hot weather. Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to help keep it cooler for longer.

2. **Shade and Shelter**: Create shaded areas in your yard where your dog can rest comfortably away from direct sunlight. If your dog spends time outdoors, provide a shelter like a doghouse or a covered patio where they can escape the heat.

3. **Limit Exercise in Heat**: Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, opt for walks and playtime during the cooler mornings or evenings when temperatures are lower.

4. **Avoid Hot Surfaces**: Pavement, asphalt, and sand can become extremely hot and burn your dog's paws. Stick to grassy areas or walk your dog during cooler times of the day to prevent burns or discomfort.

5. **Cooling Mats or Pads**: Invest in a cooling mat or pad for your dog to lie on. These products are designed to absorb and dissipate heat, providing a cool surface for your dog to relax on indoors or outdoors.

6. **Use Fans or Air Conditioning**: Keep your home well-ventilated and cool using fans or air conditioning. If your dog spends time indoors, make sure they have access to areas with good airflow to help regulate their body temperature.

7. **Provide Frozen Treats**: Offer your dog frozen treats like ice cubes, frozen fruits, or specially formulated doggy ice cream to help them cool down from the inside out.

8. **Wet Towels or Misting**: Dampen a towel with cool water and place it over your dog's back or belly to help lower their body temperature. You can also use a spray bottle to mist your dog with cool water for instant relief.

9. **Grooming**: Regular grooming can help keep your dog's coat in good condition and prevent overheating. Brushing out excess fur and keeping their coat clean can improve air circulation and cooling.

10. **Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car**: Even with the windows cracked open, temperatures inside a car can quickly reach dangerous levels. Never leave your dog unattended in a parked car, as it can lead to heatstroke and even death.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your dog stays cool and comfortable, even during the hottest days of the year.
